If you enjoy hiking and camping, then you will need to buy the right kind of equipment and gear, such as a lightweight tent, sleeping bag, cooking utensils and perhaps portable camping stoves. Everything you buy for hiking needs to be lightweight and easy to pack and unpack. If you are hiking in to an area and will only have the items in your backpack, this is really important. You do not want to end up so mush stuff that your backpack becomes to heavy to carry. Many first time hikers think they need to pack everything in the world with them, including the kitchen sink. This simply is not necessary. A sleeping bag, tent, first aid kit, food, and maybe portable camping stoves are all you should really need.
Depending how long of a trip you are planning and how many days and nights you will be away, you will need food and water. Of course, for longer periods of time you would not be able to pack enough water with you because of the weight. You will need a water filtration bottle. As for food, you should carry as much freeze dried food as possible. You can buy specially made packages of high energy, high protein, and high fat content foods that are easier to carry. Use your portable stoves to make a special dinner or breakfast. Also nice to have is snack items such as nuts, raisins, fruit rolls.
Your clothing choice should be carefully studied and chosen wisely. You need to stay dry and warm. This means a lightweight, breathable jacket, and long pants for protection from bugs, briars, and poison ivy, extra socks, and good quality hiking boots. Make sure your boots are well worn in and comfortable of you feet. There is nothing worse than a blister any where on your foot, much less on your heel. This is the most important thing to remember about your choice of hiking clothing. You may want to roll up a rain poncho and carry with you. You will end up completely miserable if it rains and you end up soaked. Not only is there a possibility of your legs and sides becoming chapped, but also you will end up getting cold. A rain poncho will keep the rain off your clothing and body for added warmth and wind protection. Portable camping stoves are also useful to help dry out your wet clothing.
