There have been a high number of identity thefts in recent years and there have been many different attempts to thwart the efforts of would-be thieves. Protection of an individual's identity has become a high priority for banks and credit card companies, and has also become a lucrative business for those that can offer protection from identity theft. One of the measures used to protect identity used by credit card companies and banking institutions is a photo ID.
A photograph on a credit card or bank card is a useful way of protecting identity because it requires an image that is laminated or digitally inscribed onto the back of a credit card or bank debit card. These cards also have features that utilize passwords and personal identification numbers in order to access the account that is assigned to that particular individual. The picture, in order to be effective, needs to be current and cannot be applied to the card using a method where by the picture can be altered. Using a method of applying the photograph to the card that is tamper proof is an extremely important component to the identity theft protection feature of the bank debit card or the credit card.
Photo ID is also used on a valid driver's license by the Department of Motor Vehicles to identify a legal resident that is certified to legally operate a motor vehicle in which the driver's license was issued. These driver's licenses are a measure of identity protection because, in many cases, they are used, in fact often, required in conjunction with a photograph on the back of a credit card or bank debit card. The identity of the individual who obtains a driver's license, in many states, requires that the individual provide proof of birth in the country of the United States of America or a legal reason to obtain a driver's license for non-resident of the United States. Because the issuing state requires many different forms of identity proof, the state can insure that the individual obtaining the driver's license with a photo ID is in fact, that individual.
When an individual is required to show their photo ID, they must use an official document that has been verified and certified as being the true identity of the individual who has the document in their possession. Identity theft and the misuse of documents baring the identity of an individual have substantially been reduced due the stringent requirement of the Department of Motor Vehicles.
