If someone were to enter your kitchen for the first time, and then leave your home soon after, chances are one of the things he or she would remember the clearest about your kitchen is what kind of kitchen window treatments you have. Whether it's a shade or blinds or curtains or something else, kitchen window treatments just naturally draw your eyes; they really are a focal point of the entire room. With that in mind, it's a good idea to make sure your treatments are as attractive as they can be.

Kitchen window treatments really do influence the tone of the entire room. If they have a homey look to them-say they're ruffled, dark green curtains-they can make the room seem rustic and feel lived-in. If you have modern blinds, by contrast, you can give the room a stylish, contemporary look. These treatments can also help you to carry out a theme. For instance, if you have a tablecloth decorated with little corncobs, you could get the same corncobs stitched onto your kitchen curtains to unify the space. Or the kitchen curtains could match the floor rug near the sink.

Sheer curtains can really let in a lot of sunlight and cheer you up while you cook; you'll save on electricity, too. Caf curtains are another cheerful item. They will admit a lot of sunshine, but they are not totally transparent so you will have privacy while you eat. If you and your significant other prefer to dine by candlelight at the kitchen table, however, you might want blinds or shades to set the properly dark romantic atmosphere. (Blinds and shades are good for people who eat at the kitchen table for another reason: if you eat breakfast at sunrise or dinner at sundown you could get blinded by the rays of sun streaming in.) Blinds come in all sorts of materials, too. Aluminum blinds are popular, as are blinds made out of wood (real wood and fake wood) and vinyl.

Shades are another good choice when it comes to these treatments. If you get pleated shades-pleated shades now come in all varieties of colors and patterns, by the way-these shades will provide you with insulation, which will help keep you warm and save you money on your heating bill, and they allow a lot of light to come into your kitchen as well. And pleated shades come with cords or without, depending on your preference.
